A couple weeks ago, I received the email at the bottom of this post from a former intern.

We have a few values I strive to hold very true here at 3B – One is to create together – Another is to create moments. Great moments often result from having the vision for moonshots in the first place.

I believe moonshot marketing is a theory that can both be taught and practiced.

It may come more natural to some than others, but in its simplest form:

What is it you’re striving for that when successful will change everything as you know it?

As JJ put effortlessly below:

those moments that make up 1% of your total efforts or work load, but can attribute to 99% of your growth and impact in a certain period of time. I believe that today I have achieved my first one.

Wins in the modern music business are typically the result of lots of singles and doubles, not necessarily home runs. Nonetheless, it’s the big ideas that aim for the moon, the ones the fans will talk about and share that are paving the way for hit records and viral movements.

So what does your act need and how are you going to make it happen for them?

Hey Jake,
Long time no talk! I would generally say ‘I hope all is well’ but I know things are always on the up and up for you.
I’ve been reading the daily AoaM posts habitually, and they are helping me immensely as I continue to grow as a manager. Also apologies in advance for the longish email haha.
I wanted to reach out today as I was recently reflecting on my time at TH3RD BRAIN, as I do often. Its crazy to me how often I tap into what I learned during my short 10 weeks as a 3B intern..
Today my newest act Half an Orange began their roll out for their upcoming song ‘Old Friends’, and I couldn’t help but think about how you used to talk to me about moonshot marketing. It has been three years so what I remember may not be completely accurate, but from what I remember it was all about creating those moments that may make up 1% of your total efforts or work load, but can attribute to 99% of your growth and impact in a certain period of time. I believe that today I have achieved my first one.
After managing to squeak into rotation at Sirius XM Chill with our last single, we were able to grab the potentially fleeting attention of Twitch star Ninja one night as he was tuning in to the channel on a drive. Realizing this was a chance for a real ‘moonshot’, as you would put it, we jumped on the opportunity to connect and create a relationship with him.
A couple months later, we were flying out to shoot with him as the star in the music video for this upcoming single. Today he began rolling it out via his massive social media platforms, and our Instagram has grown by over 50% in the past 6 hours. The music video is actually going to be uploaded to his YouTube channel in a couple weeks, in partnership with Monstercat.
Long story short, even though we may not be in as contact as much as we once were, your lessons from my time at TH3RD BRAIN are still influencing me to this day, and for that I just want to say thank you.
There’s still a long way to go for me, but I do know that without you believing in me as a college student back in the day and giving me a chance to come and learn from you, opportunities like this would be a lot harder to not only come by, but capitalize on.
To the moon we go.
Best,
JJ
