While originally meant to signify males, we’ve used it for the last 100 years… To describe “just about anyone” (according to the Atlantic).
Is “guys” acceptable? Or exclusive?
Well, that’s not up to you, but your audience.
Sure, many people don’t have any problem with it, but some do. So is it worth using?
Instead of “hey guys” or “thanks guys”… You can try the word everybody instead. Or instead of “you guys”, you can use “you all”.
Male-default terms are everywhere in our society (i.e. chairman). Putting in a little more consideration to our everyday communication makes the world more accepting for everybody.
